Dark patterns are user-interface designs that manipulate or trick people into decisions they would not otherwise make, such as hidden cancellation flows, pre-checked add-ons, or artificial urgency countdowns. Regulators including the FTC, CMA, and ACCC treat dark patterns as unfair or deceptive practices, and enforcement has expanded sharply across subscription, fintech, and lending products.
